The journal publishes original research papers, reviews and case reports within clinical endocrinology. There are no submission charges.
Please note: The European Journal of Endocrinology no longer accepts experimental papers. The journal now requires declarations of interest and funding sections.
Correspondence related to published work is published at the discretion of the Editorial Board. Letters should not exceed one printed page, including references, one table or one figure. Authors of the work being discussed will ordinarily be allowed to reply.
Articles up to six printed pages in length will incur no publication charges. A six-page article is approximately 4,500 words, however, allowance must also be made for figures and tables. Additional pages will incur a charge of 350 per printed page.
The European Journal of Endocrinology requires authors to submit online. Online submission and peer review can help to achieve more rapid publication than the paper-based system and enables you to monitor the progress of your submission.
It also means that your paper can be included in the Accepted Preprint service.
Authors should ensure that they hold all relevant permissions for the reproduction or adaptation of any figures or tables that have been published previously (permission should be obtained from the original publisher and author(s)). Reference to personal communications should be avoided, but when necessary a letter granting permission to publish the personal communication from the person providing the information must be included at the time of submission.
To expedite refereeing, authors should supply copies of any references cited as In Press as additional supplementary files.
Equal consideration is given to all manuscripts in English from any country. Statements in articles are the responsibility of the authors.
Authors should keep copies of everything submitted.
For any queries, please contact the Editorial Office.
Articles are considered on the understanding that if they are accepted for publication the entire copyright shall pass to the European Society of Endocrinology. All authors are asked to sign a copyright transfer form to this effect. To facilitate the processing of your manuscript please print out the agreement, and return the completed form by fax to the Editorial Office at the following number +44-1454-642201.
For information on how to request permission to reproduce any part of a paper published in European Journal of Endocrinology see the permissions and commercial reprints page.
Please include a covering letter (PDF File) including the following statement in the appropiate section of your online submission.
"The author(s) hereby confirms that neither the manuscript nor any part of it, except for abstracts of less than 400 words, has been published or is being considered for publication elsewhere. By signing this letter each of us acknowledges that he or she participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for its content."
This letter should also include: (a) information on duplicate publication or submission elsewhere of any part of the work, (b) a statement of financial or other relationships which might lead to a conflict of interest, (c) permission to reproduce illustrations that may identify human subjects, (d) the name, address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the corresponding author. Any changes to the authorship of the manuscript during the peer review process require the complete agreement of all authors in writing, as per the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.
Authors may suggest at least three scientists as reviewers, and may also identify persons whom they would prefer not to be consulted, stating their reasons.
Manuscripts should have a line spacing of 2 (double-spaced) in a serif font (e.g. Times), with a size of at least 10 point.
For original research papers, this should generally comprise the Abstract, Introduction, Materials and methods or Subjects and methods, Results, Discussion and any Acknowledgements. The arrangement of material for other types of article is at the discretion of the authors, but this should in general conform with the requirements for original research papers. All abbreviations should be defined at the point of first occurrence.
Authors should also refer to the CONSORT 2010 Statement, and in particular the checklist within it, when preparing manuscripts detailing clinical trials.
Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with accepted gene nomenclature.
Gene symbols should be in italics with all letters capitalised; protein designations should be the same as the gene symbols but not italicised. For example:
Gene symbols and protein designations should conform to HUGO Gene Nomenclature guidelines.
Gene symbols should be in italics with only the first letter capitalised. Protein designations should be the same as the gene symbols except that all letters should be capitalised and in roman (i.e. not italicised). For example:
Gene symbols and protein designations should conform to the Rules for Nomenclature of Mouse and Rat Strains.
This should carry the title of the article, the names and addresses of all authors (the institution to which the work is to be attributed should be listed first), the name, address, fax number and email address of the corresponding author, and a short running title for page headings. The word count of the full article should also appear on the title page.
This should be divided using the headings Objective (giving the context of the study), Design, Methods, Results and Conclusions. It should be easily understood, without the need to refer to the main text, and should have a maximum length of 250 words. All abbreviations should be defined.
Please insert before the reference list.
Declaration of interest: Please either (a) fully declare any financial or other potential conflict of interest; or (b) declare that there is no conflict of interest that could be perceived as prejudicing the impartiality of the research reported.
Funding: Please detail all of the sources of funding relevant to the research reported in the format below.
This work was supported by the Medical Research Council (grant numbers xxxx, yyyy); the Wellcome Trust (grant number xxxx); and Tommy's Baby charity (grant number xxxx).
Where research has not been funded please state the following:
This research did not receive any specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial or not-for-profit sector.
Author contribution statement (optional): Please include a statement specifying the contribution of each co-author.
Acknowledgements: Please be as brief as possible.
References should be cited in numerical order in the text, and listed in this order at the end of the paper. All authors should be listed. The standard format for references is shown in the following examples.
Personal Communications should be cited in the text in parentheses and include the person's name, his or her title, and date. They should not be included in the References list: (Hampton SA, Editor-in-Chief, personal communication, October 12, 2005.).
Please note that papers with incorrectly formatted references will be returned and the acceptance date changed to the date of receipt of the correctly formatted paper.
Figures should be supplied separately from their legends, and each figure should be clearly numbered and on a separate page. Avoid the use of shading and stripes as these are difficult to reproduce. Authors should plan figures so that they remain clear when reduced to fit within a single column in the journal (82 mm wide). Authors will be asked to pay the costs of any colour reproduction and must do so by credit card before publication. Please see the colour charges form. Please use EPS and TIF files wherever possible.
Please also see the additional information regarding the submission of figures.
Figure legends should be provided as a separate file. They should enable the figure to be understood in isolation from the main text. Unusual abbreviations should be defined. It should be stated whether values presented are meansħS.E.M., meansħS.D., etc. Where statistical analyses have been performed, probabilities for comparisons should be clearly stated and the tests used should be named. Magnifications should be indicated by means of scale bars, wherever possible.
No specific feature within an image may be enhanced, obscured, moved, removed, or introduced. The groupings of images from different parts of the same gel, or from different gels, fields or exposures must be made explicit by the arrangement of the figure (e.g. using dividing lines) and in the text of the figure legend. Adjustments of brightness, contrast, or colour balance are acceptable if and as long as they do not obscure or eliminate any information present in the original. Nonlinear adjustments (e.g. changes to gamma settings) must be disclosed in the figure legend.
This policy is adopted from The Journal of Cell Biology.
Each table should be provided on a separate page and should have a line-spacing of 2 (i.e. double-spaced). It should be possible to understand each table in isolation from the main text. In general, instructions for the preparation of figure legends apply.
All authors must abide by the standards outlined in the journal's ethical guidelines. In particular, please note the need to avoid duplicate submission, plagiarism and self-plagiarism.
Where possible, identifying information, including names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, or pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent requires that an identifiable patient be shown the manuscript to be published. Authors should disclose to these patients whether any potential identifiable material might be available via the Internet as well as in print after publication. Informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt that anonymity can be maintained.
Authors are required to sign a warranty that they have obtained written consent from all patients where anonymity cannot be guaranteed.
Papers reporting clinical trials will only be considered if the trials have been pre-registered according to the guidelines set out in The Lancet 364 Issue 9438 911-912.
BioScientifica is a member of CrossCheck. CrossCheck is a multi-publisher initiative to screen published and submitted content for originality. Manuscript submissions will be screened against the CrossCheck database.
Please note the journal's policy on self archiving. Acceptance of this policy is a condition of publication.
Supplementary data too large for print publication or exceeding the bounds of the manuscript may be suitable for online publication.
Supplementary data files intended for online publication should be submitted online via ScholarOne Manuscripts as a 'Supplemental File for Review', and referred to as supplementary data in the text. Supplementary information will be reviewed as part of the manuscript, evaluated for its importance and relevance, and if accepted should be referenced in the text of the article, directing readers to the web site.
There is a charge to the author of £100 for the first file and £20 for each subsequent file. When submitting a manuscript with supplementary data please complete a supplementary data form.
Offprints can be ordered on the offprint order form which will accompany the proofs.
Peer-reviewed proceedings and reviews may be accepted for publication as a supplement to the European Journal of Endocrinology.
The organizer(s) or authors(s) of the meeting will be responsible for the full costs of the supplement. For further information, please contact the Editorial Office.
