NEONATAL WEIGHT LOSS IN INFANTS OF DIABETIC MOTHERS

Mogens Osler and Jørgen Pedersen

It is generally accepted that the newborn infants of diabetic mothers are larger, more obese, and more oedematous than the infants or normal mothers. While it has been proved that the infants of diabetic mothers (diab. infants) are larger and heavier at birth than the infants of normal mothers, the difference averaging 1.5 cm. and 550 gm. respectively in infants born 3 weeks before term (Pedersen, 1954), there is no direct evidence that these infants are more obese and more oedematous. This has merely been concluded on the basis of their typical appearance and their more marked loss of weight during the neonatal period. The present study was designed to ascertain the amount of this neonatal weight loss and to throw some light upon the cause.

PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS: Only a few analyses on the neonatal loss of weight of diab. infants have been published. White (1952) found the average weight
