The innovations of 1996

Although fundamental questions are likely to be the same throughout the world, the approach to these matters in Europe is still a question of national politics, born of geographical, economic and linguistic specificities. However, some exchange of ideas and attempts at harmonization in terms of the definition and outline of clinical training programmes are now being developed through the European Union of Medical Specialists.

The European Federation of Endocrine Societies (EFES), which brings together clinical and experimental endocrinologists in Europe, is certainly also an ideal forum for such discussions. A concerted effort within this organization could be of great value since, as an unofficial place of debate, it will permit the expression of opinions from all the different branches of endocrinology.

Many ways of approaching this problem have been envisaged. Rather than await the possibility of a complex and timely inquiry covering systematically all details and questions of basic and
